December 13, 2018, Kailua, HI.  The 11th Annual HI ALS Community Yard Sale celebrates two firsts on Saturday, December 15, 2018.  For the first time, the yard sale will be held in wintertime AND organized by the UH JABSOM Department of Communication and Language Disorders graduate students led by Haleigh Smith and Renee Martin. The Department of Communication and Language Disorders (DCLD) trains students in Speech Pathology, a discipline that helps pALS communicate when their speech muscles are affected by the disease.  ALSFH President Robillard and ALS Community advocates Shaun and Renee Brewer have been regular guests at the Department Colloquia held every Fall at the JABSOM campus in Kakaako.

Long-time ALS Community volunteer Nancy Fujino lost husband Lloyd to ALS almost two decades ago.

Long-time ALS Community volunteers Nancy Fujino, and Penny and Brad Chun retired as coordinators of the Yard Sale.  “It is time for the young ones to take up the responsibility,” mused Penny Chun at last year’s Christmas Holiday Party.  This year, it appears the young people have indeed taken up the mantle.
