ALS Community Prepares for “May as ALS Awareness and ALS Families Appreciation Month”

Kailua, Hawaii.  The ALS Community in Hawaii has a long history of being organized around a support group that started in 1998.  Joyce Okahashi and I worked with Kathleen Hurtubise-Lin, then Muscular Dystrophy Association-Hawaii Executive Director, to set up the first ALS Support Group. ALSFH Attends 30th Legislature Opening Day

  January 20, 2019, Kailua, HI. The 30th Legislative session opened on Wednesday, January 16, 2019. At 10 AM, the program within the stately Senate floor started with Temporary Chair, Senator Kaiali Kahele (District 1-Hilo) pounding the gavel and calling the Senate to order. The anthems brought attention to the historic meaning of the session opening day to  state governance. Hawaii ALS Community Yard Sale This Saturday!

December 13, 2018, Kailua, HI.  The 11th Annual HI ALS Community Yard Sale celebrates two firsts on Saturday, December 15, 2018.  For the first time, the yard sale will be held in wintertime AND organized by the UH JABSOM Department of Communication and Language Disorders graduate students led by Haleigh Smith and Renee Martin. ALS Community Holiday Party Set for December 18!

December 4, 2018, Kailua, HI.  The annual Holiday Party for the Hawaii ALS Community is being moved to a new location. The party will be held on Tuesday, December 18, at the front lanai of the Central Seventh-Day Adventist Church on 2313 Nuuanu Ave.  The past 10 years, the party was held at the back lanai of the Philippine Consulate General (PCG) on Pali Highway. HiNAMI Recognizes Teaching Volunteers for the 17th Year: ALSFH was there!

November 19, 2018, Kailua, HI.  Since 2001, Hawaii Nurse Advocates and Mentors, Inc. (HiNAMI) has been offering free review classes to graduates of foreign nursing schools to help them pass the RN-NCLEX licensing examinations.  Current teaching and mentoring volunteer staff now include those who have been through these review classes themselves.  Founding President Bea Ramos-Razon is the energy and force behind this long-lasting community service that provides opportunities for professional nurses from academe and health care institutions to help swell…

2018 Veteran’s Day at the Natatorium War Memorial: ALSFH was there!

On Veterans Day, Sunday, November 11, 2018, Hawaii celebrated the end of World War I with a whole day series of presentations from 6am at the Waikiki Natatorium.  It ended at 8:45 pm with a fireworks immediately after a full orchestra played nostalgia-era standards.
